The Baldwin Building
Many newcomers to the area may not be aware that Revolution’s home was to home to Baldwin’s, one of the area’s most famous department stores, for many years. Built in 1928 and expanded in the 1940s the building has an interesting history. Check out the Endangered Durham blog for some great old photos of the building (as well as all other parts of Durham). Another interesting chapter in the building’s history took place in 2006 when French photographer and installation artist Georges Rousse was hired to come to Durham to produce an exhibit that incorporated 12 historic downtown buildings that were “in transition”. The Baldwin Building was one of them. If you check out the Construction Progress gallery you can see Rousse’s artwork as it was when we moved in.
